The bound together kingdom of Denmark rose in the eighth century as a skilled marine nation in the fight for control of the Baltic Sea. Danish rulers controlled the individual Kalmar Union, set up in 1397 (of Denmark, Norway and Sweden), which completed with Swedish severance in 1523. Denmark and Norway stayed under the same ruler until the union was separated by outside forces in 1814. Brought on by the Black Death, the debilitating of the Kingdom of Norway made it workable for Denmark to secure a wide traveler space from this union, of which the Faroe Islands and Greenland are leftovers.



Beginning in the seventeenth century, there were a couple of cessions of area; these completed in the 1830s with a surge of nationalist advancements, which were vanquished in the 1864 Second Schleswig War. Denmark stayed objective in the midst of World War I. In April 1940, a German assault saw brief military clashes while the Danish resistance advancement was changing from 1943 until the German surrender in May 1945.
